Start with the dates that are genuinely fixed
Write down the last possible collection date, the first day you can receive the goods and the latest acceptable arrival. Mark each as fixed or preferred. A tenancy ending on Friday is a collection constraint; keys becoming available the following week are a separate receiving constraint. A dedicated vehicle alone does not resolve a gap between them.
For a shared-load enquiry, explain which dates can change and by how much. I can assess whether suitable space and a compatible route are available. Do not plan around an assumed weekly departure or a saving that has not been offered. If the dates cannot move, say so at the start rather than after choosing an option.
Compare the arrangement, not just the amount of space
Dedicated transport allocates a vehicle to your consignment. It can be assessed when the schedule, load or requested handling makes that appropriate, including for a smaller inventory. Shared or part-load transport uses part of the available capacity alongside other goods; suitability depends on the load and the proposed journey.
Describe fragile items, furniture that must remain upright, non-stackable units and anything requiring particular protection. These conditions can affect how a load can be combined and handled. Confirm the proposed collection and delivery windows, any intermediate handling and what is included; do not assume every shared or dedicated arrangement has identical terms.
Keep payload, crew and customs as separate decisions
Both arrangements need packed dimensions, quantities and approximate weights. A few heavy boxes can have different capacity needs from bulky light furniture. I choose the vehicle from space, payload, openings and access, rather than from the label dedicated or shared.
Neither option automatically includes extra helpers, carrying upstairs, packing or assembly. Give floors, lift sizes, parking distance and help available at both ends. Customs requirements depend on the actual route, goods and circumstances; using only part of a vehicle does not remove them. Ask which document stages are agreed alongside transport.
Request alternatives on the same scope
If you want to compare options, send one current inventory and the same handling requirements for both. State which collection and arrival dates can change. A cheaper-looking proposal with less carrying, different dates or no requested storage is not an equivalent service.
I explain the workable arrangements and confirm the individual offer. If suitable shared capacity is unavailable, that does not mean you must invent a smaller load or accept an unsuitable arrival date. We can assess dedicated capacity, revised dates or a separately agreed storage plan.

| Question | Information to compare |
|---|---|
| Timing | Fixed collection deadline, receiving readiness and agreed arrival window |
| Cargo | The same inventory, weight, packed dimensions and restrictions |
| Handling | Driver role, helpers, floors, protection and intermediate handling |
| Additional stages | Storage, crossings and any agreed clearance scope |
| Offer | Confirmed inclusions and conditions, rather than a headline price |
Practical questions
Is shared transport always cheaper?
No saving is guaranteed. I assess available capacity, dates and the complete requested work. Compare offers with equivalent handling and document scope.
Can I request a dedicated vehicle for a few belongings?
Yes. Send the load, route and timing requirements. A vehicle does not have to be filled to be considered for a dedicated arrangement.
Does dedicated mean an exact delivery time?
No automatic time is implied. Travel, driver schedule, crossings, loading and receiving access still need to fit the agreed plan.
